| Planting Garlic - December 27
In Bulletin 10 we showed pictures of some square foot beds where we planted carrots with Justin holding the templates for the plant spacing. With the garlic planting we tried to take the template idea even further. Using a hole saw we drilled nine holes per square foot in 4X6 foot cut sheets cardboard from refrigerator cartons. We planted nine garlic cloves per square foot through the holes. We sprinkled sand and through each hole before pressing the garlic down. After the garlic we covered the depression left with a mixture of compost and alfalfa dust. Might have done better but it was raining.
The cardboard should prevent weeds from sprouting and break down some in the spring to allow garlic growth. Not sure it will work. The cardboard contracted when it dried but the holes still matched the garlic. I want to try thinner cardboard. After the rain and more planting the beds were covered with leaves to prevent heaving from frost.
